Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Known locally as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ - the smoke that thunders - the falls are the widest curtain of falling water on earth and offer breathtaking scenery and unforgettable experiences for all kinds of travellers.
Adventure and Activities
Victoria Falls is often called the adventure capital of Africa, with activities ranging from thrilling to leisurely:
- Sunset Cruises on the Zambezi River – relax and watch the wildlife as the sun sets over the mighty river.
- Bungee Jumping from the Zambezi Bridge – for adrenaline seekers.
- Helicopter or Light Aircraft Flights – the famous ‘Flight of the Angels’ provides spectacular aerial views of the falls and surrounding landscape.
- Elephant Back Safaris & Lion Encounters – up-close wildlife experiences you’ll never forget.
- 4WD Game Drives & Canoeing – explore the wilderness at your own pace.
- White Water Rafting – the Zambezi’s rapids provide a world-class challenge, with the World Championship usually held during low water in October/November.
The Falls Themselves
Less adventurous visitors can enjoy scenic walks through the Victoria Falls National Park. Excellent vantage points are available from both the Zimbabwean and Zambian sides, allowing for peaceful contemplation of the falls’ power and beauty.
- Size and Scale – Twice as high and one and a half times as wide as Niagara Falls, the Zambezi River spans more than 2 kilometres at the falls.
- Height – Ranging from 60 to 110 metres.
- Five Separate Falls – Devils Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Eastern Cataract.
- Spray – The mist from the falls can be seen over 20 kilometres away, rising up to 450 metres at peak flow around mid-April. Waterproof cameras and raincoats are essential at this time of year!
- Low Water Season – From October to November, the flow reduces to around 10 million litres per minute, creating a series of separate channels and excellent gorge views.
